Navigating the energy of May…
Aligning with Lunar and Astrological Energies in May: TCM, Qigong, and Yoga
May brings a host of exciting astrological events, including lunar cycles that offer opportunities to connect with the cosmos and align our energies. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognizes the importance of harmonizing with these natural cycles, and practices such as Qigong can help us cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
During May, we experience both a New Moon and a Full Moon, which are powerful times to focus on self-reflection, intention-setting, and release. Moon Salutation, or Chandra Namaskar, is a yoga practice that helps to balance our internal energies and connect with the powerful lunar energies at play.
Moon Salutation Yoga:
Stand with your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, and arms relaxed at your sides.
Inhale, raising your arms overhead, palms facing up.
Exhale, lowering your arms to your sides, palms facing down.
Continue this movement for several breaths, visualizing the moon's energy flowing into your body as you inhale and releasing any stagnant energy as you exhale.

From a TCM perspective, May is a time of transition from the Liver (Spring) to the Heart (Summer) season. The Liver, associated with the Wood element, is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and blood in the body. The Heart, associated with the Fire element, governs circulation, emotional balance, and mental clarity.
To support this transition, you can practice the Microcosmic Orbit meditation, a foundational Qigong practice that circulates energy through the body's main energy channels, the Ren and Du meridians.
Microcosmic Orbit Meditation:
Sit comfortably with your spine straight and your tongue touching the roof of your mouth.
Focus your attention on your lower abdomen (Dantian), and breathe deeply and slowly.
As you inhale, imagine energy (Qi) rising from your Dantian, up your spine (Du meridian), to the crown of your head (Baihui point).
As you exhale, imagine the energy descending from the crown of your head, down the front of your body (Ren meridian), and returning to the Dantian.
Continue this practice for several minutes, visualizing the energy circulating along the Microcosmic Orbit.

In addition to Qigong, you can support your body during this energetic transition with regular massages and Chi Nei Tsang sessions. These modalities help to release stagnant energy, promote relaxation, and balance the body's internal energies.
By incorporating TCM, Qigong, yoga, and an understanding of astrological influences, you can create a holistic approach to self-care and wellness in May. Embrace the power of the lunar cycles and planetary energies to nurture your mind, body, and spirit throughout the month of May.
I look forward to seeing you on my table soon and hear about how the spring energy has been treating you!
